Find the country from a photo
Drop a photo in the box above and GeoSnoop tells you which country it was most likely taken in, with its chance. Your first photo is free and needs no account. It reads only what is in the picture, so screenshots and photos without location data work too.
Want to know which country you are in right now? The map app on your phone shows it. This page is for photos.
What you get
- The most likely country, with the chance the photo was taken there (free).
- Country Matches: the other countries that fit, each with its chance, for photos that could be in more than one.
- City Matches and a map of the likely area. Country Matches, cities and the map come with an account and credits. More on finding the exact place
How to tell what country a photo is from
- Text: the language and alphabet on signs, shop names and posters.
- Licence plates: their shape, colours and the band or letters on the side.
- The road: which side cars drive on, the colour of road markings, bollards and road signs.
- Poles and wires: wooden or concrete utility poles and how the power lines hang.
- Buildings and plants: roof styles, building materials, trees and crops.
GeoSnoop weighs all of these at once: it compares your photo with hundreds of millions of photos from around the world whose location is known. How photo geolocation works
Photos that work best
Street scenes, buildings, landscapes and anything with signs or cars give the clearest answers. Close-ups, indoor rooms and photos that are mostly people or sky carry fewer clues: GeoSnoop then shows a lower chance or several countries. When nothing in a picture points to a place, it says "Unknown Location" and charges nothing.

Questions
- What country is this photo from?
- Drop it in the box above: GeoSnoop shows the most likely country and how sure it is. Your first photo is free, no account needed.
- Can I find the country of a picture for free?
- Yes. Your first photo is free without an account. A free account gets 10 credits for full results, then 5 country-only searches a day. See pricing
- How sure is the answer?
- Every result shows its chance, and GeoSnoop never shows 100%. A street scene with signs usually gives a much surer answer than a close-up. See the benchmark results
- Does it need the photo's GPS or EXIF data?
- No. GeoSnoop reads only what is visible in the photo.
